A method for adjusting light through a smart lens

A smart lens system for controlling an active area of a display of a smart lens, the display comprising a matrix of display elements, the smart lens system comprising:

• a memory storing instructions;
• and
• processing circuitry operable to execute the instructions, wherein the smart lens system is configured to:
• determine the pupil size of a user using the smart lens;
• acquire a user interface (UI) image;
• adapt the size of an active area of the display of the smart lens based on content of the UI image and the determined pupil size, and
• control a total illuminance exposed to the retina of the user based on determined ambient illuminance and illuminance of the active area of the display so that the size of the active area of the display is maintained substantially constant for a series of consecutive UI images, irrespective of the content of the UI image.
