A method (400) of testing a fibre optic cable (170-1) of a fibre optic network (100) using a Mechanically Induced Filter (200), MIF, comprising a grating (210), and the method comprising the steps of: retrieving, from an optical reflectometry measuring device (120): a first test result (180-1) from a first optical reflectometry test performed whilst there is a first extent of filtering upon the fibre optic network (410); and a second test result (180-2) from a second optical reflectometry test performed whilst using the MIF to force the grating upon the fibre optic cable (420) and thereby to cause a second extent of filtering upon the fibre optic network, wherein the second extent of filtering is greater than the first extent of filtering; and comparing the first and the second test results so as to identify an expected attenuation, caused by the MIF, between the first test result and the second test result (430).
