The present disclosure relates to novel alkylating agent suitable to form quaternary salt compounds including, in one embodiment, amide ester compounds having a minor amount of diamide compounds. The novel alkylating agents can be obtained from the reaction of a primary or secondary amine with a dialkyl oxalate to form to novel amide-esters that can be used to quaternize most any tertiary amine to produce useful cationic detergents with novel anionic counterions. By using the discovered alkylating agents, the counterion of any formed quaternary ammonium salt can be tailored to provide additional performance, such as friction and wear control. The resulting counterion can also provide improved solubility as compared to other methylating agents.
An alkylating agent suitable to form quaternary ammonium compounds, the alkylating agent comprising an amide ester compound having a structure of Formula I:
A method of forming an alkylating agent for quaternary ammonium compounds, the method comprising reacting (i) an amine or polyamine having a primary or secondary nitrogen with (ii) a dialkyl oxalate in the presence of a solvent to form a reaction product including a majority of an amide ester compound having a structure of Formula I and minority of a diamide compound having a structure of Formula II:
A method of preparing a quaternary ammonium salt, the method comprising quaternizing a compound having a tertiary nitrogen with an alkylating agent, wherein the alkylating agent includes an amide ester compound having a structure of Formula I
