Abstract
Disclosed is an apparatus for treating wastewater that includes a tank having a wall, defining an inner surface, and a floor; a clarifier having an outer surface selectably fixed relative to said tank; and a diffuser; wherein the inner surface, the outer surface and the diffuser are configured to compel wastewater in the tank to define a flow along a direction up the outer surface and down the inner surface. A method of treating wastewater also is disclosed.
Claims13
An apparatus for treating wastewater, comprising:
- a cylindrical tank having an inner wall, an outer wall, a top defining a top circumference, and a bottom defining a bottom circumference;
- wherein the bottom circumference is smaller than the top circumference;
- a tapered clarifier positioned within the tapered, cylindrical tank and having an octagonal top periphery, four tapered sidewalls, and a bottom;
- four aeration zones formed within the cylindrical tank, wherein each aeration zone is defined by a first space formed between each tapered sidewall of the square clarifier and the adjacent inner wall of the cylindrical tank;
- and
- four boundary zones formed within the cylindrical tank, wherein each boundary zone is defined by a second space formed between each corner joint of the square clarifier and the adjacent inner wall of the cylindrical tank, wherein each boundary zone functions to separate adjacent aeration zones.

An apparatus for treating wastewater comprising:
- (a) a tank comprising a tank wall, wherein an inner surface of the tank wall is configured as an inverted conical frustrum;
- (b) a clarifier positioned within the tank and defined by an octagonal top periphery and an outer surface configured as an inverted pyramidal frustum;
- and
- (c) wherein the inner surface of the tank wall and the outer surface of the clarifier are configured to compel wastewater in said tank to define a flow that is substantially constant along a direction up said outer surface and down said inner surface.

A method of treating wastewater comprising:
- (a) providing a tank comprising:
- a wall defining an inner surface, the inner surface defining at least one of the group consisting of:
- a cylinder, an inverted conical frustrum, or a combination thereof;
- and (ii) a floor;
- (b) disposing in the tank a clarifier having a top octagonal periphery and an outer surface defining an inverted pyramidal frustrum;
- (c) introducing wastewater into the tank;
- and(d) inducing the wastewater to define a flow along a direction up the outer surface and down the inner surface.
