An eddy current retarder includes a braking member, permanent magnets, and pole pieces. The pole pieces each include an inner circumferential surface. The inner circumferential surface faces, in a braking state, one permanent magnet with a gap in the radial direction. The inner circumferential surface includes a first region and a second region. The first region is separated in the radial direction from the permanent magnet at an increasing distance toward a front end side in the direction of rotation of the permanent magnet when switching from a non-braking state to the braking state in a manner such that the gap is larger on the front end side. The second region is separated in the radial direction from the permanent magnet at an increasing distance toward a rear end side in the rotation direction in a manner such that the gap is larger on the rear end side.
