Abstract
Circuits and methods that implement multiplexing for photons propagating in waveguides are disclosed, in which an input photon received on a selected one of a set of input waveguides can be selectably routed to one of a set of output waveguides. The output waveguide can be selected on a rotating or cyclic basis, in a randomized or partially randomized order, or in a fixed order, and the input waveguides can be selected based at least in part on which of a set of input waveguides are currently propagating a photon.

A method comprising:
- receiving, by a first generalized Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (GMZI) of an optical device, a first photon from a first input, the first GMZI having a first plurality of inputs that includes the first input and a first plurality of outputs;
- receiving, by a second GMZI of the optical device, a second photon from a second input, the second GMZI having a second plurality inputs that includes the second input and a second plurality of outputs, the optical device further comprising a plurality of outputs between the first GMZI and second GMZI, the plurality of outputs having different optical delays, the second photon being in an early time bin in the optical device and the first photon being a later time bin in the optical device such that the second GMZI receives the second photon before the first photon are received by the first GMZI;
- based on the second photon being in the early time bin in the optical device and the first photon being in the later time bin in the optical device,
- directing, using the first GMZI, the first photon to an output of the plurality of outputs, the output having a delay, and
- directing the second photon to the output using the second GMZI such that the second photon and the first photon are both in a same time bin in the optical device;
- and
- outputting the first photon and the second photon from the output.
