Abstract

A method of handling a casing section can include rotating a mandrel of a casing running tool in a rotational direction, thereby making-up or breaking-out a threaded connection, then rotating the mandrel in an opposite rotational direction, and applying a longitudinally compressive load to the casing running tool, thereby retracting slips of the casing running tool out of gripping engagement with the casing section. A casing running tool can include a tubular mandrel, slips configured to grip a casing section in response to rotation of the mandrel, a make-up activation sleeve configured to displace in a longitudinal direction in response to rotation of the mandrel in a rotational direction, and a break-out activation sleeve configured to displace in an opposite longitudinal direction in response to the rotation of the mandrel in the rotational direction.
