A stitchbonded fabric having one or more nonwoven sheet consisting of cellulosic, preferably lyocell, fibers oriented multidirectionally within the sheet, and a pattern of stitches of shrinkable yarns that, after shrink-activating, gathers the fabric into a gathered stitchbonded fabric. The stitching has yarn overlaps over a technical front surface and yarn underlaps over a technical back surface of the nonwoven sheet. The cellulosic fibers provide a ratio of tensile strength in the machine:cross directions of the nonwoven sheet of 3:1 or less. The stitchbonded fabric unit contains 40% to 80% by weight cellulosic fibers, and 20% to 60% by weight shrinkable yarns, and has an MD:CD tensile strength ratio of 6:1 or less. The nonwoven cellulosic sheet and the gathered stitchbonded fabric therefrom contain a de minimis or no amount of binding fibers or adhesive material, to avoid interfering with the needles of the yarn stitching of the fabric unit.
