Abstract
Laser-markable dark-colored insulation materials that produce light-color marking with remarkably high contrast and durability, when marked with UV laser, are disclosed. Also disclosed are materials, synthesis, and application of the laser-markable insulation materials, and methods of making the insulation materials.
Claims20
An insulated wire comprising:
- an electrical conductor;
- and
- a UV laser-markable dark-colored insulation material disposed around the electrical conductor,
- wherein the insulation material comprises:
- a fluoropolymer up to 100 parts;
- a color pigment configured to render the insulation material dark-colored in an amount ranging from 1 to 20 parts per hundred resin (phr) based on the fluoropolymer;
- and
- a UV laser-marking additive in an amount ranging from 1 to 20 phr based on the fluoropolymer,
- wherein the UV laser-marking additive comprises:
- a mixture of mica, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, and antimony-doped tin oxide, or
- mica coated with titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, and antimony-doped tin oxide, and
- wherein the insulation material is configured to produce, upon UV laser irradiation, a light-color marking on the dark-colored insulation material having an initial contrast of at least about 55% as measured according to AS4373 standards.

A method, comprising:
- blending a dry mixture for forming an insulation material, the dry mixture comprising:
- a fluoropolymer resin up to 100 parts,
- a color pigment configured to render the insulation material dark-colored in an amount ranging from 1 to 20 parts per hundred resin (phr) based on the fluoropolymer, and
- a UV laser-marking additive configured to produce a light-color marking on the dark-colored insulation material when irradiated with UV laser light in an amount ranging from 1 to 20 phr based on the fluoropolymer;
- wet mixing the blended dry mixture with a lubricant to form a wet mixture;
- forming the wet mixture into a billet;
- and
- extruding the billet to produce the dark-colored insulation material,
- wherein the UV laser-marking additive comprises a mixture of mica, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, and antimony-doped tin oxide, or mica coated with titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, and antimony-doped tin oxide, and
- wherein the insulation material is capable of producing, upon UV laser irradiation, a light-color marking on the dark-colored insulation material having an initial contrast of at least about 55% as measured according to AS4373 standards.
