A bat, such as a baseball bat or a softball bat, includes an outer elongated barrel having a tapered region and a cylindrical region extending from the tapered region. An inner tube is disposed within the outer barrel such that a gap is provided between a distal end of the inner tube and an end cap. The inner tube is retained within the cylindrical region by at least one suspension member. At least one barrel insert is positioned annularly around the inner tube that affects transverse movement of the inner tube upon force being imposed in the cylindrical region. The barrel insert may include a first annular barrel insert positioned around a central region of the inner tube, and second and third annular barrel inserts positioned on opposing sides of the first barrel insert. The barrel inserts can be part of an assembly, which may further include an outer tube.
