Abstract
A bilaterally gripped multiplanar exercise device that is ergonomically designed to avoid harmful stresses on the user's body throughout a selected range of exercise motion is disclosed. The invention enables the user to perform multiplanar exercise that cannot be achieved with existing devices or perhaps too difficult to do so. These objects are attained by dispersing an attached tension or force vector (i.e., resistance) to act at a selected ratio at each middle finger grip center so that the user's gripping hands, wrists, and forearms can become an ergonomic multiplanar interface of resistance application to the human body.
Claims3
A bilaterally-gripped exercise device comprising:
- (a) a pair of handles, each handle defining a grip point at a predetermined location on or within the handle;
- (b) a handle-joining assembly connecting the pair of handles and defining a grip-point line that extends directly between the grip points;
- (c) a tension-vector receiving assembly supported by the handle-joining assembly and comprising:
- (i) a rotating trunnion disposed between opposing handle-supporting portions of the handle-joining assembly and cooperating therewith to rotatably join the opposing handle-supporting portions together by a pair of opposing bearings positioned at opposite ends of the rotating trunnion, the opposing bearings, the rotating trunnion, and the handle-joining assembly together defining a first axis of rotation substantially collinear with the grip-point line and passing through a pivot point on the grip-point line, wherein the rotating trunnion and the opposing handle-supporting portions are relatively rotatable with respect to each other about the first axis of rotation;
- (ii) a trunnion axle assembly supported by the rotating trunnion and defining a second axis of rotation that is perpendicular to the first axis of rotation and intersects the pivot point;
- and (iii) a tension-vector attachment assembly rotatably coupled to the trunnion axle assembly and configured to receive a tension member conveying a tension vector from a tension source;
- (d) wherein the tension-vector attachment assembly is rotatable about the second axis of rotation, and the rotating trunnion is rotatable about the first axis of rotation so that the applied tension vector is maintained substantially collinear with and intersecting the pivot point throughout a working range of exercise angles;
- and
- (e) wherein the handle-joining assembly is configured to transmit the applied tension vector from the pivot point along diverging paths to the respective grip points to produce at each grip point a substantially parallel component of the applied tension vector.
