Abstract
An obstructive sleep apnea detection device including an optical engagement surface adapted to engage a user's skin; a light source adapted to emit light from the optical engagement surface; a photodetector adapted to detect light at the optical engagement surface and to generate a detected light signal; a position sensor adapted to determine patient sleeping position; a controller adapted to determine and record in memory blood oxygen saturation values computed from the detected light signal and user position information from the position sensor; and a housing supporting the optical engagement surface, the photodetector, the light source, the position sensor, and the controller.
Claims20
A system for evaluating sleep of a user, comprising:
- a device configured to be worn by the user, the device comprising:
- a housing comprising an optical engagement surface adapted to contact tissue of the user;
- a first optical element disposed at least partially within the housing and adapted to emit light through the optical engagement surface into the tissue of the user;
- and a second optical element disposed at least partially within the housing and adapted to receive the light through the optical engagement surface, the second optical element configured to:
- generate one or more detected light signals based at least in part on the received light, wherein the one or more detected light signals comprise a photoplethysmography (PPG) waveform, and wherein the one or more detected light signals are associated with physiological measurements of the user;
- and a controller adapted to:
- identify at least a first patient sleeping position of the user and a second patient sleeping position of the user based at least in part on one or more waveform characteristics of the PPG waveform;
- obtain one or more analysis results for the first patient sleeping position and the second patient sleeping position based at least in part on a comparison between a first subset of the physiological measurements occurring when the user is in the first patient sleeping position, and a second subset of the physiological measurements occurring when the user is in the second patient sleeping position;
- and record in memory the one or more analysis results for the first patient sleeping position and the second patient sleeping position.
A method for evaluating sleep of a user, comprising:
- generating, using one or more optical elements of a device configured to be worn by a user, one or more detected light signals comprising a photoplethysmography (PPG) waveform, wherein the one or more detected light signals are associated with physiological measurements of the user;
- identifying at least a first patient sleeping position of the user and a second patient sleeping position of the user based at least in part on one or more waveform characteristics of the PPG waveform;
- obtaining one or more analysis results for the first patient sleeping position and the second patient sleeping position based at least in part on a comparison between a first subset of the physiological measurements occurring when the user is in the first patient sleeping position, and a second subset of the physiological measurements occurring when the user is in the second patient sleeping position;
- and recording in memory the one or more analysis results for the first patient sleeping position and the second patient sleeping position in accordance with the comparison.
