Surgical Kits for Orthopedic Surgery and Associated Surgical Techniques

A method for translating bone segments following an osteotomy, comprising:

• establishing a spatial reference relative to a patient bone using a first pin and a second pin, wherein the first pin is inserted at a first location on the patient bone and the second pin is inserted at a second location on the patient bone;
• positioning a surgical guide relative to the patient bone using the first pin and the second pin such that positioning of the surgical guide is achieved using three non-colinear points, one of which contacts the first pin and one of which contacts the second pin, and without reliance on a patient-specific conformal bone-facing surface;
• performing an osteotomy to separate the patient bone into at least a first bone segment and a second bone segment;
• and
• translating at least one of the first bone segment or the second bone segment relative to the other based on a planned alignment defined by the spatial reference established by the first pin and the second pin.

A surgical guide system for performing an osteotomy, comprising:

• a surgical guide comprising:
• a chassis;
• and
• an osteotomy guide defining a planned osteotomy site;
• wherein:
• (i) the surgical guide is configured to be positioned on a patient bone using a first pin and a second pin inserted into the patient bone at respective locations;
• (ii) the surgical guide includes elements configured to contact three non-colinear points, one of which contacts the first pin and one of which contacts the second pin, such that the surgical guide is positionable relative to the patient bone without reliance on a patient-specific conformal bone-facing surface;
• (iii) the osteotomy guide is configured to guide an osteotomy at the planned osteotomy site when the surgical guide is positioned on the patient bone;
• and (iv) the surgical guide, or a second surgical guide configured to interface with at least one of the first pin or the second pin, is configured to guide translation and alignment of bone segments following the osteotomy into a planned alignment defined by a spatial relationship established by the first pin and the second pin.
