A system includes a nail, an aiming jig having connecting hole and openings, and an inserting handle releasably coupled to the nail and the jig. The nail is inserted through a medullary canal of a tibia such that a distal portion of the nail is received within a calcaneus and a talus of a foot while a proximal portion of the nail is received within the tibia. The hole is sized, shaped and slidably receives a distal portion of the handle so that the jig is in a desired orientation relative to the handle and the nail. The openings extend through the jig along central axes defining a trajectory along which independent fixation elements are inserted through to provide supplemental fixation of subtalar joint or tibiotalar joint without colliding with the nail and locking elements received within holes of the nail when the jig is in an operative configuration.
