A medical device for detecting an analyte in a body fluid has an electronics unit with a sensor circuit. An analyte sensor has an insertable portion adapted for at least partially being inserted into a body tissue. The sensor has two or more conductor paths configured for activating the sensor circuit and also has two electrodes each having an electrode conductor path configured for transmitting a sensor current for detecting the analyte. An insertion cannula has the analyte sensor at least partially placed therein. A housing is provided that has an electronics compartment that at least partially receives the electronics unit. The housing has an open channel at least partially surrounding the analyte sensor and the cannula. When the insertion component retracts from the open channel, it triggers electrical contact of the two conductor paths by a connector and this activates the sensor circuit.
