The invention relates to a method for displaying to a viewer of an autostereoscopic display device a stereoscopic image of a 3D-scene, wherein rendering of the stereoscopic image takes into account the viewing position of the viewer relative to the autostereoscopic display device, so that the viewer is allowed to experience the 3D-scene with a perspective that corresponds to his viewing position relative to the 3D-scene. In the method of the invention, the rendering is performed on the center of the eyeballs rather than on the pupils. This makes that saccadic movement of the eyes of the viewer is by-passed and does not play a role in the image rendering, thereby solving the problem that saccadic movement is too fast to be taken account of in a timely manner, because of system latency. The method of the invention effects that a viewer experiences the intended stereoscopic image in a correct manner, also immediately after a saccadic movement of the eyes. The invention also relates to an autostereoscopic display device configured to perform such method.
