Abstract
Disclosed are systems for adjusting bias power provided to a radio-frequency amplifier to one or more figures of merit based on sensed characteristics of the amplifier and/or characteristics of the input or output power. The systems may be used in terrestrial and satellite based communications and radar, among other possibilities.
Claims22
An amplifying system comprising:
- a radio-frequency (RF) amplifier, the RF amplifier configured to receive an incoming RF signal through an input port and output an outgoing RF signal through an output port, the RF amplifier comprising a field effect transistor (FET) comprising a gate terminal, a drain terminal and a source terminal;
- and
- a power management system configured to:
- provide a first bias voltage at the gate terminal to turn on the RF amplifier in response to receiving an indication that the incoming RF signal is applied to the input port;
- sense a current at the drain terminal while the RF amplifier is turned on;
- adjust the first bias voltage based on the current at the drain terminal to maintain the current at the drain terminal in a threshold range while the RF amplifier is turned on;
- and
- provide a second bias voltage at the gate terminal to turn off the RF amplifier in response to receiving an indication that the incoming RF signal is not applied to the input port.

A power management system comprising:
- an electronic processing system;
- a power adapting system configured to convert power received from an external power supply to a voltage that turns on an amplifier connected to the power management system;
- a sensing system configured to sense a current from the amplifier;
- and
- a memory connected to the electronic processing system, the memory storing instructions that, when executed by the electronic processing system, cause the electronic processing system to:
- receive an input being indicative of a signal being applied to the amplifier;
- in response to receiving the input, cause the power adapting system to provide a bias voltage to the amplifier configured to turn on the amplifier;
- receive via the sensing system, the current from the amplifier, the current being indicative of a state of the amplifier;
- and
- cause the power adapting system to adjust the bias voltage based on the current.
