Nonlinear unsharp masking for halo-controlled image sharpening

An electronic device comprising:

• at least one processing device configured to:
• obtain a first channel of an input image;
• generate an unsharp mask based on the first channel of the input image;
• apply a nonlinear function to pixels of the unsharp mask to obtain a modulated unsharp mask;
• combine the first channel of the input image and the modulated unsharp mask to obtain a first channel of an output image;
• sharpen one or more remaining channels of the input image based on the unsharp mask to obtain one or more remaining channels of the output image;
• and
• combine the first channel of the output image and the one or more remaining channels of the output image to generate the output image.

A non-transitory machine readable medium containing instructions that when executed cause at least one processor of an electronic device to:

• obtain a first channel of an input image;
• generate an unsharp mask based on the first channel of the input image;
• apply a nonlinear function to pixels of the unsharp mask to obtain a modulated unsharp mask;
• combine the first channel of the input image and the modulated unsharp mask to obtain a first channel of an output image;
• sharpen one or more remaining channels of the input image based on the unsharp mask to obtain one or more remaining channels of the output image;
• and
• combine the first channel of the output image and the one or more remaining channels of the output image to generate the output image.
