Abstract
A method for encoding a video signal. The method comprises receiving encoding instructions for encoding the video signal and encoding the video signal using a training loop for optimizing a metric of the encoded video signal, wherein the training loop comprises a loss function and one or more of a neural encoder and a neural decoder. The training loop is adapted based on the encoding instructions.

A comprising:
- receiving encoding instructions, wherein the encoding instructions are arranged to describe how to encode the video signal and/or what use to encode the video signal for;
- encoding the video signal using a training loop,
- wherein the training loop is arranged to optimize a metric of the encoded video signal,
- wherein the training loop comprises a loss function and at least one of a neural encoder and a neural decoder;
- and
- changing the training loop based on the encoding instructions.

- receiving the encoded video signal, wherein the encoded signal is based on the encoding instructions and a training loop comprising a neural decoder;

- decoding the encoded video signal using the neural decoder and the decoding parameters.
