Abstract
A process for quantifying the amount of unbound metal and bound metal in solution is provided. A process for quantifying the amount of bound metal amino acid chelate and free ligand in a solid (e.g., dry mixture such as an animal feed) is also provided.
Claims18
A process for inducing selective partitioning of a metal in an aqueous solution, comprising:
- (a) reacting a metal compound with phytic acid in an aqueous solution at a pH of about 3.0 and at a molar ratio of phytic acid to metal compound of at least 6:1 to form a reaction mixture;
- and
- (b) increasing the pH of the reaction mixture to about 5.0 to about 7.0, wherein the process results in a distribution of the metal between a soluble phase and an insoluble phase.
A method for evaluating formation of a metal-phytate complex, comprising:
- (a) reacting a metal compound with phytic acid at a pH of about 3.0 and at a molar ratio of at least 6:1;
- (b) increasing the pH to about 5.0 to about 7.0;
- and
- (c) monitoring a change in distribution of the metal between soluble and insoluble forms over time.

A composition comprising:
- (a) an aqueous solution containing phytic acid;
- and
- (b) a metal distributed between:
- (i) a soluble phase comprising a metal-phytate complex, and
- (ii) an insoluble phase comprising a metal-containing precipitate,
- wherein the composition is obtainable by reacting a metal compound with phytic acid at a pH of about 3.0 and at a molar ratio of at least 6:1, followed by increasing the pH to about 5.0 to about 7.0.
