Abstract
A method of determining a force applied between a first part and a second part connected to the first part via a shape memory alloy, SMA, element such that force is transferred via the SMA element. The force is determined based on a resistance of the SMA element or an amount of energy applied to the SMA element in order to maintain a resistance of the SMA element at a predetermined value.

A force sensor comprising a first part and a second part connected to the first part via a shape memory alloy, SMA, element such that in response to a force applied between the first and second parts, a force is transferred via the SMA element;
- wherein the force sensor is configured to determine the force applied between the first and second parts based on a resistance of the SMA element or an amount of energy applied to the SMA element in order to maintain a resistance of the SMA element at a predetermined value.
