Diagnostics of HVAC system based on visual and sound signatures

A method comprising:

• determining if a triggering event has occurred;
• in response to determining that the triggering event has occurred, entering a filter diagnostics mode;
• sending a first instruction to a thermostat to shut down a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system;
• capturing, using a camera, at least one image of a filter of the HVAC system;
• analyzing the at least one image to assess a condition of a filter of the HVAC system;
• classifying the filter as acceptable or dirty based at least in part upon the analysis;
• in response to classifying the filter as acceptable, sending a second instruction to the thermostat to turn on the HVAC system;
• determining a desired mode of the HVAC system based on the triggering event;
• in response to determining that the desired mode is a cooling mode:
• determining a first value of a room temperature;
• instructing the user to set a temperature setpoint below the first value of the room temperature;
• determining a second value of the room temperature;
• comparing the first value of the room temperature to the second value of the room temperature;
• and
• in response to determining that the second value of the room temperature is less than the first value of the room temperature, determining that the HVAC system operates properly.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

• determine if a triggering event has occurred;
• in response to determining that the triggering event has occurred, enter a filter diagnostics mode;
• send a first instruction to a thermostat to shut down a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system;
• capture, using a camera, at least one image of a filter of the HVAC system;
• analyze the at least one image to assess a condition of a filter of the HVAC system;
• classify the filter as acceptable or dirty based at least in part upon the analysis;
• in response to classifying the filter as acceptable, send a second instruction to the thermostat to turn on the HVAC system;
• determine a desired mode of the HVAC system based on the triggering event;
• in response to determining that the desired mode is a cooling mode:
• determine a first value of a room temperature;
• instruct the user to set a temperature setpoint below the first value of the room temperature;
• determine a second value of the room temperature;
• compare the first value of the room temperature to the second value of the room temperature;
• and
• in response to determining that the second value of the room temperature is less than the first value of the room temperature, determine that the HVAC system operates properly.
