Abstract
Embodiments disclosed herein include a focusing mechanism for a portable light. A light assembly is provided that allows adjustment of the beam pattern between a spot beam and a flood beam, without increasing the length of the light assembly. The light assembly includes an optic portion (an optic) and a body. The optic can include an outer collar, an optic assembly, an inner collar and a head frame assembly. A spring presses the outer collar forward to lock it in place. The outer collar is pulled back slightly by the user, then rotated and released to change the beam type. The light can be a hand-held light or mounted to an object such as a firearm.

An apparatus, comprising:
- a head frame assembly including a spring and a light source;
- an inner collar within the head frame assembly, wherein the inner collar is rotatable relative to the head frame assembly about a longitudinal axis of the head frame assembly;
- an optic assembly including a lens facing frontward in the apparatus, wherein the optic assembly is within the inner collar and is moveable axially;
- and
- an outer collar surrounding the head frame assembly, the inner collar and the optic assembly, wherein the outer collar is moveable axially and rotatable about the longitudinal axis.
A hand-held light, comprising:
- a head frame assembly including a spring and a light source;
- an inner collar within the head frame assembly, wherein the inner collar is rotatable relative to the head frame assembly about a longitudinal axis of the head frame assembly;
- an optic assembly including a lens facing frontward, wherein the optic assembly is within the inner collar and is moveable axially;
- an outer collar surrounding the head frame assembly, the inner collar and the optic assembly, wherein the outer collar is moveable parallel to the longitudinal axis and rotatable about the longitudinal axis;
- and
- an elongated body configured to attach to the head frame assembly.
