Abstract
Methods and systems are for identifying the cell type of an unknown microorganism. The device includes: an apparatus for culturing unknown organism(s), a diagnostic data acquisition tool and a computer program. The method includes: incubation of the sample with a growth medium (with or without toxins), and an analysis of the metabolites detected in the sample. The computer system compares the results collected from the device to reference metabolite profiles.

1-26. (canceled)
A method for determining antimicrobial resistance of a Streptococcus species, comprising:
- culturing the Streptococcus species in a growth medium to obtain a cultured growth medium, the growth medium comprising (i) nutrients including niacinamide for the Streptococcus species to grow long enough to obtain metabolic signals;
- and (ii) an antimicrobial effective against the Streptococcus species;
- analysing the cultured growth medium by chemical analysis;
- and
- identifying the Streptococcus species as resistant to the antimicrobial when the cultured growth medium contains a higher concentration of nicotinate compared to the growth medium.
A method for determining antimicrobial resistance of a microbial species of interest, the microbial species of interest being one or more of Escherichia, Klebsiella, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus or Streptococcus comprising:
- culturing the microbial species of interest in a growth medium to obtain a cultured growth medium, the growth medium comprising (i) nutrients including glucose and niacinamide to support growth of the microbial species of interest;
- and (ii) an antimicrobial effective against the microbial species of interest;
- analysing the cultured growth medium by chemical analysis;
- identifying the microbial species of interest as resistant to the antimicrobial when analysing indicates that glucose is consumed in the cultured growth media;
- and
- identifying the microbial species of interest as a resistant Streptococcus species when the cultured growth media contains a higher concentration of nicotinate compared to the growth medium.
