Abstract
An expandable exothermic gel-forming composition and method of using the same is disclosed. The composition can include a mixture of first metallic galvanic alloy particles and second metallic galvanic alloy particles having a different oxidation potential than the first metallic galvanic alloy particles, a metallic secondary shell that includes at least one transitional metal, and a superabsorbent polymer. The composition is configured, upon exposure to water and an electrolyte in the absence of air, to form an expandable exothermic gel that generates heat. At least about 95% of hydrogen gas produced by the exothermic reaction is retained within a matrix of the gel before escaping from the gel.

An expandable exothermic gel-forming composition comprising:
- a mixture of first metallic galvanic alloy particles and second metallic galvanic alloy particles having a different oxidation potential than the first metallic galvanic alloy particles;
- a metallic secondary shell comprising at least one transitional metal;
- and
- a superabsorbent polymer,
- wherein the composition is configured, upon exposure to water and an electrolyte in the absence of air, to form an expandable exothermic gel that generates heat, and
- wherein at least about 95% of hydrogen gas produced by the exothermic reaction is retained within a matrix of the gel before escaping from the gel.
An expandable exothermic gel-forming composition comprising (a) manganese dioxide;
- and (b) a superabsorbent polymer, wherein the composition is configured, upon exposure to water and an electrolyte in the absence of air, to form an expandable exothermic gel that generates heat, and wherein at least about 95% of hydrogen gas produced by the exothermic reaction is retained within a matrix of the gel before escaping from the gel.
A method of generating heat using an expandable exothermic gel, comprising:
- contacting an expandable exothermic gel-forming composition with water and an electrolyte in an environment substantially free of molecular oxygen, thereby forming an expandable exothermic gel that generates heat, wherein at least about 95% of hydrogen gas produced by the exothermic reaction is retained within a matrix of the gel prior to escaping from the gel.
