Abstract
Parts made of ceramic-metal composite materials having a homogeneous surface polishing, and surface finishing processes to achieve homogeneous surface polishing. In some implementations, the part is a machining tool that demonstrates, after polishing, a compressive tension less than −500 MPa or equal to or greater than 40% of the compressive stresses generated during a previous grinding process. Also disclosed is a polishing medium useful in achieving a homogenous surface polishing.
Claims20
A part comprising:
- a ceramic-metal composite material including ceramic phase embedded within a metal matrix, the ceramic-metal composite material possessing a homogeneous surface polishing wherein an interface between the ceramic phase and metal matrix has a surface roughness of less than 100 nm, the homogeneous surface polishing having a surface compressive stress of lower than −500 MPa.
A medium for polishing a part comprising:
- solid particles that each retain therein a liquid electrolyte and/or water:
- and
- a liquid coating the solid particles that is less electrically conductive than the solid particles and immiscible with the liquid electrolyte and/or water, the liquid coating the solid particles including chemical compounds being selected from one or more of a group consisting of fatty acids (C8-C20), fatty alcohols (C2-C20), glycols (C2-C20) and an organosulfur compound.
A method for polishing a surface of a part made of a ceramic-metal composite material, the method comprising:
- immersing the part in a container containing a medium, the medium including solid particles that each retains therein a liquid electrolyte and/or water:
- and a liquid coating the solid particles that is less electrically conductive than solid particles and immiscible with the liquid electrolyte and/or water, the liquid including chemical compounds selected from one or more of a group consisting of fatty acids (C8-C20), fatty alcohols (C2-C20), glycols (C2-C20) and an organosulfur compound;
- electrically connecting the part to a first power supply terminal and providing at least one cathode electrode connected to a second power supply terminal within the container;
- inducing motion of the solid particles relative to the surface of the part;
- and
- applying cyclic electrical pulses between the part and the cathode electrode.
