Coated glass articles with adhesion promoting region

A method for producing a coated glass article, the method comprising:

• providing a glass article comprising a glass having a surface having a first surface area and a first refractive index;
• forming an adhesion promoting region at the surface, wherein the adhesion promoting region comprises a nanostructure comprising materials that are the same as constituents of the glass and the adhesion promoting region has a surface roughness of greater than or equal to 0.3 nm;
• after forming the adhesion promotion region at the surface, applying a coating to the adhesion promoting region to produce the coated glass article, wherein the coating comprises at least one polymer coating material;
• and
• wherein the adhesion promoting region and the coating provide no impedance to optical inspection of the glass article, contents contained within the glass article, or both.
