Abstract
The present disclosure provides tubing comprising porous fluoropolymers for use in non-medical and medical applications along with methods of making the tubing. Also described are medical devices including catheters and shunts comprising the tubing.
Claims45
A catheter, cannula, drain, shunt, port, or totally implantable venous access port comprising a section of tubing, wherein the section of tubing comprises:
- (i) at least two lumens separated by septa separating the lumens, (ii) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid,
- wherein
- (a) the outer wall and the septa are comprised of a porous fluoropolymer having pores, and
- (b) at least a portion of the fluorinated liquid is absorbed into the pores of both the septa and the outer wall, and a portion of the fluorinated liquid is located on the outer surface of the tubing, and
- (c) the fluorinated liquid in the pores of the septa, pores of the outer wall, and on the outer surface are in fluid communication and can flow between the pores and the outer surface.
A catheter, cannula, drain, shunt, port, or totally implantable venous access port comprising a section of tubing, wherein the section of tubing comprises:
- (i) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, (ii) at least one nonporous liner within and contacting the outer wall, the liner comprising a lumen, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid;
- wherein
- (a) the outer wall is comprised of a porous fluoropolymer having pores,
- (b) at least a portion of the fluorinated liquid is absorbed into the pores, and a portion of the fluorinated liquid is located on the outer surface of the tubing, and
- (c) the fluorinated liquid in the pores of the outer wall and on the outer surface are in fluid communication and can flow between the pores and the outer surface.
A catheter, cannula, drain, shunt, port, or totally implantable venous access port comprising a section of tubing, wherein the section of tubing comprises:
- (i) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, (ii) a nonporous liner comprising two or more lumens, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid;
- wherein
- (a) the outer wall is comprised of a porous fluoropolymer having pores,
- (b) at least a portion of the fluorinated liquid is absorbed into the pores, and a portion of the fluorinated liquid is located (adsorbed) on the outer surface of the tubing, and
- (c) the fluorinated liquid in the pores of the outer wall and on the outer surface are in fluid communication and can flow between the pores and the outer surface.
A method of making tubing comprising a porous fluoropolymer outer wall and nonporous fluoropolymer lined lumens, comprising the steps of:
- (i) bringing two or more nonporous polymer tubes having lumens into contact, optionally with an intervening layer of material,
- (ii) bonding the two or more nonporous polymer tubes and any intervening material present together to form an inner liner assembly, and
- (iii) covering the inner liner assembly with a porous fluoropolymer outer wall.
Tubing comprising:
- (i) at least two lumens separated by septa, (ii) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid;
- wherein
- (a) the outer wall and the septa are comprised of a porous fluoropolymer having pores,
- (b) at least a portion of the fluorinated liquid is absorbed into the pores of both the septa and the outer wall, and a portion of the fluorinated liquid is located on the outer surface of the tubing, and
- (c) the fluorinated liquid in the pores of the septa, pores of the outer wall, and on the outer surface are in fluid communication and can flow between the pores and the outer surface.
Tubing comprising:
- (i) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, (ii) at least one nonporous liner within and contacting the outer wall, the liner comprising a lumen, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid;
Tubing comprising:
- (i) an outer wall having an outer surface located on the external face of the tubing, (ii) a nonporous liner comprising two or more lumens, and (iii) a fluorinated liquid;
A method of forming tubing comprising an outer wall and two or more lumens separated by septa, the method comprising extrusion forming the outer wall and at least one septum, wherein the outer wall and the at least one septum separating the lumens is comprised of a porous fluoropolymer.
