Abstract
A disinfecting system includes a housing. An ultraviolet light (UV) source is secured to the housing and configured to emit UV light for disinfection of a target. A processor is secured to the housing in communication with the UV light source. The processor is configured to activate the UV light source for a selected amount of time suitable for disinfection of the target.
Claims20
A method for killing pathogens on a biological surface using ultraviolet light, comprising:
- providing a UV-C light source configured to emit ultraviolet light at a selected wavelength, wherein the selected wavelength is in a range of 100 nm to 280 nm;
- exposing the biological surface to a controlled dose of UV-C light for a predetermined treatment time, wherein the predetermined treatment time is selected based on a target pathogen to be eliminated;
- and
- disrupting DNA and RNA of the target pathogen to kill the target pathogen on the biological surface.
A system for killing pathogens on a biological surface, comprising:
- a housing;
- a UV-C light source coupled to the housing and configured to emit ultraviolet light at a selected wavelength, wherein the selected wavelength is in a range of 100 nm to 280 nm;
- a processor coupled to the housing and in communication with the UV-C light source, the processor configured to:
- activate the UV-C light source for a predetermined treatment time, wherein the predetermined treatment time is selected based on a target pathogen to be eliminated;
- and
- control the UV-C light source to expose the biological surface to a controlled dose of UV-C light sufficient to disrupt DNA and RNA of the target pathogen to kill the target pathogen on the biological surface without chemical application.
A robot for killing pathogens on a biological surface, comprising:
- a housing;
- a movement apparatus coupled to the housing and configured to propel the housing across a surface;
- a UV-C light source coupled to the housing and configured to emit ultraviolet light at a selected wavelength, wherein the selected wavelength is in a range of 100 nm to 280 nm;
- a processor coupled to the housing and in communication with the UV-C light source, the processor configured to:
- activate the UV-C light source for a predetermined treatment time, wherein the predetermined treatment time is selected based on a target pathogen to be eliminated;
- and
- control the UV-C light source to expose the biological surface to a controlled dose of UV-C light sufficient to disrupt DNA and RNA of the target pathogen to kill the target pathogen on the biological surface without chemical application.
