Compositions and principles for use before parturition in the prophylactic treatment of hypocalcemia in ruminant animals include compositions having phosphate binders for the prophylactic treatment of parturient hypocalcemia in ruminant animals. These compositions are presented in unit dosage forms, with one or more doses administered daily to the gastrointestinal tract of the ruminant animal, or in wet form. The composition contains one or more phosphate binders and one or more nutrients selected from minerals, vitamins, and amino acids, as well as a composition that includes an inhibitor of the small intestinal Na-phosphate transporter for the prophylactic treatment of parturient hypocalcemia in ruminant animals. Phosphate binders are selected from aluminum, iron, sevelamer, and lanthanum salts, with either inorganic or organic acids, hydrates thereof, or any mixture thereof.
