Abstract
Systems, devices, and methods described herein relate to catheter devices for therapy delivery in tumor treatment applications. In some embodiments, a catheter device includes a shaft defining a lumen, and a needle device disposed in the lumen, the needle device having a distal portion that includes an exposed electrical conductor, where the distal portion of the needle device is configured to be extended out of the lumen. The needle device can be configured to receive a pulsed voltage waveform and to deliver a pulsed electric field via the exposed electrical conductor to ablate surrounding tissue.
Claims29
A system, comprising:
- a catheter device including a shaft and a needle;
- a handle that is coupled to a proximal end of the shaft, the needle disposed through a lumen of the shaft and slidable relative to the shaft such that the needle can be advanced distally beyond the shaft to penetrate into a tissue site, the shaft including a first electrode on a distal portion of the shaft, the first electrode having a compressible geometry, and the needle including a second electrode at a distal end thereof;
- and
- a pulse generator configured to be coupled to the catheter device, the pulse generator configured to generate and deliver biphasic voltage pulses to the catheter device such that the first electrode is activated with a first polarity and the second electrode is activated with a second polarity opposite to the first polarity to deliver electroporation to a zone of tissue at the tissue site.
A system, comprising:
- a catheter device including a shaft and a needle, the shaft defining a lumen configured to slidably receive the needle, the shaft including a first electrode on a distal portion thereof and having a compressible geometry, and the needle including a second electrode at a distal end thereof,
- the needle configured to be transitioned from a first configuration in which the distal end of the needle is within the lumen of the shaft to a second configuration in which the distal end of the needle is advanced distally beyond the shaft to penetrate into a tissue site;
- and
- a pulse generator configured to be coupled to the catheter device, the pulse generator configured to generate and deliver voltage pulses to the catheter device such that the first electrode and second electrode deliver electroporation to a zone of tissue at the tissue site.
A method, comprising:
- positioning a catheter device near a tissue site, the catheter device including a shaft and a needle slidably disposed in a lumen of the shaft;
- transitioning a first electrode disposed on a distal portion the shaft from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration;
- transitioning the needle from a first configuration in which a distal tip of the needle is within the lumen of the shaft to a second configuration in which the needle is advanced distally beyond a distal end of the shaft to insert the distal tip of the needle into a tissue site, the distal end of the needle including a second electrode;
- and
- delivering voltage pulses to the first electrode and the second electrode such that the first electrode and the second electrode deliver electroporation to a zone of tissue at the tissue site.
