A photoluminescent sign having an electrophoretic display overlaid on the sign to selectively mask or obscure at least a portion of the visual information presented by the sign. The sign has a photoluminescent layer and an electrophoretic display component. The electrophoretic display component includes first and second light-transmissive electrode layers and an electrophoretic material layer therebetween. The electrophoretic material layer includes an electrophoretic medium compartmentalized in microcells, which form compartments separated by light-transmissive walls. The electrophoretic medium includes electrophoretic particles in a non-polar fluid in the compartments. Application of electric fields between the first and second electrode layers selectively drives the electrophoretic particles to form different particle arrangements defining optical states of the display. The photoluminescent layer continuously receives a portion of the incident light via the light-transmissive walls in all optical states of the electrophoretic display. The photoluminescent layer outputs visible light from the received incident light.
A sign having a viewing side receiving incident light, comprising:
A method of operating a sign having a viewing side receiving incident light, the sign comprising a photoluminescent layer and an electrophoretic display component superposed on the photoluminescent layer, the electrophoretic display component comprising (a) a first light-transmissive electrode layer at the viewing side;
