Video stream authentication

An authentication platform configured to verify the authenticity of video content by performing operations comprising:

• transmitting control signals to an artificial lighting device to introduce controlled, variable lighting changes into a scene during capture of the scene by video capture functionality of a transmitter device, according to predetermined instructions during at least part of the capturing of video data, to induce at least one expected artifact in the captured video data,
• receiving captured video data from the transmitter device,
• analyzing the captured video data received from the video capture functionality to detect artifacts, and
• comparing the detected artifacts with expected artifacts based on the predetermined instructions to determine that the captured video content is authentic when correspondence is found between the detected artifacts and the expected artifacts.

A method for verifying the authenticity of video content, the method comprising:

• controlling an artificial lighting device to introduce controlled, variable lighting changes into a scene during capture of video data of the scene by video capture functionality of a transmitter device, according to predetermined instructions during at least part of the capturing of video data, to induce at least one expected artifact in the captured video data;
• receiving the captured video data from the transmitter device,
• analysing the captured video data received from the video capture functionality to detect artifacts and
• comparing the detected artifacts with expected artifacts based on the predetermined instructions and determining that the captured video content is authentic when correspondence is found between the detected artifacts and the expected artifacts.
