Over temperature protection of ldo controlling the rf power amplifier collector voltage

A power amplifier system comprising:

• a power amplifier;
• a voltage regulator circuit configured to provide a regulated supply to the power amplifier;
• a bias circuit configured to provide a bias current to the power amplifier;
• and
• a protective circuit coupled to the bias circuit, the protective circuit configured to sense a temperature and respond to the sensed temperature to reduce the bias current, resulting in reduced power dissipation in the voltage regulator circuit.

A power control circuit coupled to a power amplifier, the power control circuit comprising:

• a voltage regulator circuit configured to provide a regulated supply to the power amplifier;
• a bias circuit configured to provide a bias current to the power amplifier;
• and
• a protective circuit coupled to the bias circuit, the protective circuit configured to respond to a sensed temperature to reduce the bias current and reduce power dissipation in the voltage regulator circuit.

A method of controlling a power amplifier, the method comprising:

• generating a regulated supply with a voltage regulator circuit;
• providing the regulated supply to a power amplifier;
• generating a bias current with a bias circuit;
• providing the bias current to the power amplifier;
• sensing a temperature with a protective circuit;
• and
• responsive to the sensed temperature exceeding a threshold, reducing the bias current with the protective circuit, resulting in reduced power dissipation in the voltage regulator circuit.
