Embodiments of this application provide a metadata generation method and an electronic device. The method includes: obtaining media content; and generating metadata of the media content, where the metadata of the media content includes first information of the media content and a privacy flag, and the privacy flag indicates that the first information of the media content is public information or non-public information. In this way, non-public information and public information in the metadata of the media content may be determined based on the privacy flag, and then corresponding use/display limitation is performed on a media asset. For example, when the metadata of the media content is displayed, only the public information is displayed. For another example, in a process of using the media content, only media content whose target information is public information in the metadata of the media content is used.
