Wire grid polarizing element, method for manufacturing wire grid polarizing element, projection display device, and vehicle

A wire grid polarizing element comprising:

• a substrate made of an inorganic material;
• a grid structural body made of an organic material and including a base part provided on the substrate and a plurality of ridge portions protruding from the base part, the base part and the ridge portions being integrally formed;
• and
• a functional film made of a metal material and covering part of each of the ridge portions, wherein
• the ridge portions each have an upward narrowing shape that narrows in width with distance from the base part,
• the functional film covers and wraps a leading end and an upper side of at least one of side surfaces of each of the ridge portions, and does not cover a lower side of both the side surfaces of each of the ridge portions and the base part,
• when a coverage rate (Rc) of the side surfaces of each of the ridge portions obtained by the functional film is a proportion of a height (Hx) of a portion of the side surfaces of each of the ridge portions that is covered by the functional film to a height (H) of the ridge portions, the coverage rate (Rc) is more than or equal to 30% and less than or equal to 70%, and
• at least a portion of each of the ridge portions, the portion being covered by the functional film, is inclined at an inclination angle (α) of more than 0° and less than or equal to 15° with respect to a direction normal to the substrate.
