Abstract
Systems and methods are described for ion chromatography systems and electrolytic suppressors. By varying the operating frequency of an electrolytic suppressor the generation of bubbles and noise can be minimized. This leads to more accurate results in e.g., a conductivity detector downstream of an electrolytic suppressor within an ion chromatography system. In certain embodiments, it has been found that frequencies of around 700-750 Hz, 100-150 Hz and 925-975 Hz have achieved the best results.

An ion chromatography system comprising:
- a pump configured to deliver a liquid under process;
- a separation column configured to separate one or more analytes within the liquid under process;
- one or more electrolytic components selected from the group consisting of:
- an electrolytic suppressor;
- an eluent generator;
- and
- a continuously regenerated trap column;
- an excitation circuit configured to apply a time-varying electrical excitation to the one or more electrolytic components during chromatographic operation;
- a sensing circuit configured to measure an electrical response of the one or more electrolytic components;
- and
- a processing system configured to:
- (i) determine, from the electrical response, a frequency-dependent impedance characteristic of the one or more electrolytic components;
- and
- (ii) determine an operational condition of the one or more electrolytic components based on the frequency-dependent impedance characteristic.
A method of operating an ion chromatography system comprising:
- separating one or more analytes within a liquid under process;
- during separation, applying a time-varying electrical excitation to one or more electrolytic components selected from the group consisting of an electrolytic suppressor, an eluent generator, and a continuously regenerated trap column;
- measuring an electrical response of the one or more electrolytic components;
- determining a frequency-dependent impedance characteristic;
- and
- determining an operational condition of the one or more electrolytic components based on the frequency-dependent impedance characteristic.
