Abstract
The disclosure describes methods and devices for directing cooling air to cool CMC components. A baffle member or splash plate is used to direct the flow of cooling air towards an outer radial surface of a CMC component into a one or more cooling cavities provided within the interior of the CMC component. The splash plate provides an efficient distribution of cooling air into the one or more cooling cavities and aids in the cooling of the component to reduce the formation of thermal stresses induced by the thermal differential between the outer radial surface (cold side) and inner radial surface (hot side) of the component.
Claims23
A ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component comprising:
- a base having a radial outer surface and a radial inner surface, the base comprising a plurality of ceramic fiber plies and a ceramic matrix,
- a forward flange structure and an aft flange structure each extending from the radial outer surface of the base in a radial direction away from the radial inner surface, and
- a splash plate positioned between the forward flange structure and the aft flange structure to direct cooling air flowing from a forward end of the base to an aft end of the base towards the radial outer surface of the base,
- the splash plate having a first end connected to the forward flange structure and a second end proximate the aft flange structure, the splash plate further having an inner surface facing the radial outer surface of the base wherein the inner surface includes a curved surface region that curves continuously towards the outer radial surface of the base from the first end to the second end of the splash plate, and
- wherein the base further comprises at least one cooling cavity that extends from the outer radial surface of the base into an interior region of the base, and wherein the splash plate directs cooling air towards the at least one cooling cavity.
