Abstract
The present invention relates to an article comprising a substrate and porous hollow sphere pigments disposed thereupon, wherein the porous hollow sphere pigments have a polymeric shell phase and a hollow phase; wherein the polymeric shell phase structural units of styrene, one or more acrylate monomers, methyl methacrylate, and an acid monomer or a salt thereof. The porous hollow sphere pigments have a relatively high void fraction and are collapse resistant. The article is useful, for example, in thermosensitive paper applications.
Claims10
An article comprising a substrate and porous hollow sphere pigments disposed thereupon, wherein the porous hollow sphere pigments have a polymeric shell phase and a hollow phase;
- wherein the polymeric shell phase comprises from 60 to 80 weight percent structural units of styrene;
- from 1 to 20 weight percent structural units of one or more acrylate monomers selected from the group consisting of ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate;
- from
- 0.5 to 15 weight percent structural units of methyl methacrylate;
- and from 5 to 20 weight percent structural units of an acid monomer or a salt thereof;
- and wherein the porous hollow sphere pigments have a void fraction in the range of from 50 to 80 percent and a number average particle size in the range of from 750 nm to 2 μm.
A coated paper article comprising a paper substrate, a 1-μm to 20-μm thick basecoat layer, and a 1-μm to 30-μm thick thermosensitive recording layer, wherein the basecoat layer is disposed between the thermosensitive recording layer and the paper substrate;
- wherein the basecoat layer comprises a binder and porous hollow sphere pigments having a polymeric shell phase and a hollow phase;
- wherein the polymeric shell phase comprises from 60 to 80 weight percent structural units of styrene;
- from 1 to 20 weight percent structural units of one or more acrylate monomers selected from the group consisting of ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate;
- from 0.5 to 15 weight percent structural units of methyl methacrylate;
- and from 5 to 20 weight percent structural units of an acid monomer or a salt thereof;
- and wherein the porous hollow sphere pigments have a void fraction in the range of from 50 to 80 percent and a number average particle size in the range of from 750 nm to 2 μm.
