A process for the recycling of a vinyl chloride polymer material which has an initial level of one or more additive compounds. The process includes providing an aqueous acid composition having alcohol(s) and acid(s), and contacting the vinyl chloride polymer material and a volume of the acid composition to cause extraction of the additive compounds from the vinyl chloride polymer material. The acid composition forms a two-phase system with the vinyl chloride polymer material, including a solid phase having a purified vinyl chloride polymer material and a liquid phase having the alcohol, the water, the acid, and the extracted additive compounds. The solid phase having the purified vinyl chloride polymer material is separated from the liquid phase having the extracted additive compounds.
