Remote Operation of Robotic Systems

A device for transmitting sensor data, the device comprising:

• a transmission unit;
• a receiving unit;
• one or more processors;
• and
• a memory comprising instructions which, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:
• receive an accuracy-range mapping providing a relationship between an accuracy of the sensor at a particular value and a position of that particular value within a first range of values, a maximum required precision of a first value, a minimum range of values, and a maximum range of values;
• generate a quantization mapping using the accuracy-range mapping, the maximum required precision, the minimum range, and the maximum range;
• receive, from the sensor and using the receiving unit, sensor data comprising a second value to be transmitted;
• quantize the second value using the quantization mapping to obtain a quantized value;
• encode the quantized value to obtain encoded sensor data;
• and
• transmit, to a remote terminal and using the transmission unit, the encoded sensor data.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

• receive an accuracy-range mapping providing a relationship between an accuracy of a sensor at a particular value and a position of that particular value within a first range of values, a maximum required precision of a first value, a minimum range of values, and a maximum range of values;
• generate a quantization mapping using the accuracy-range mapping, the maximum required precision, the minimum range, and the maximum range;
• receive, from the sensor, sensor data comprising a second value to be transmitted;
• quantize the second value using the quantization mapping to obtain a quantized value;
• encode the quantized value to obtain encoded sensor data;
• and
• transmit the encoded sensor data to a remote terminal.
