Abstract
A wound dressing includes first and second electric leads contacting a first layer configured for placement on a wound. The second electric lead is spaced apart from the first electric lead. The first layer is electrically conductive and provides an uninterrupted resistive conductor between the first and second electric leads. An electric interface is coupled to the first and second electric leads, and it is configured to be operationally coupled to an electric power source configured for generating an electric current between the first electric lead and the second electric lead via the first layer.
Claims15
A wound dressing for covering a wound, wherein the wound dressing comprises:
- a first layer configured for covering a wound;
- a first electric lead contacting the first layer;
- a second electric lead contacting the first layer at a location spaced apart from the first electric lead;
- and
- an electric interface;
- wherein the first layer is electrically conductive and provides an uninterrupted resistive conductor between the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- wherein the electric interface is coupled to the first electric lead and the second electric lead and is configured to be operationally coupled to an electric power source that is configured to generate an electric current passing through the first layer between the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- and
- wherein the first layer is inert to the electric current passing through the first layer.
A wound dressing system, comprising:
- (1) a wound dressing, comprising:
- (a) a first layer configured for covering a wound;
- (b) a first electric lead contacting the first layer;
- (c) a second electric lead contacting the first layer at a location spaced apart from the first electric lead;
- and
- (d) an electric interface;
- wherein the first layer is electrically conductive and constitutes an uninterrupted resistive conductor between the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- and
- wherein the electric interface is coupled to the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- and wherein the first layer is inert to an electric current passing through the first layer;
- and
- (2) an electric power source operationally coupled to the electric interface and configured for generating an electric current between the first electric lead and the second electric lead via the first layer for reducing microbiological growth in or on the first layer.
A method for reducing microbiological growth in or on a wound dressing, wherein the method comprises:
- (1) providing a wound dressing comprising:
- (a) a first layer configured for covering a wound;
- (b) a first electric lead contacting the first layer;
- (c) a second electric lead contacting the first layer at a location spaced apart from the first electric lead;
- and
- (d) an electric interface;
- wherein the first layer is electrically conductive and constitutes an uninterrupted resistive conductor between the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- wherein the electric interface is coupled to the first electric lead and the second electric lead and is configured to be operationally coupled to an electric power source so as to generate an electric current passing through the first layer between the first electric lead and the second electric lead;
- and
- wherein the first layer is inert to the electric current passing through the first layer;
- (2) applying the wound dressing so as to cover a wound;
- and
- (3) operating the electric power source to generate an electric current in the first layer.
