Abstract
Systems and methods are provided for improving ultrasound image quality. In some embodiments, data sets can be formed from received echoes at each of a plurality of receive elements. The data between the data sets can be masked to include or exclude data. The masked data sets can then be beamformed to form ultrasound images.

A method of evaluating tissue with ultrasound, comprising the steps of:
- transmitting a first unfocused ultrasound pulse with a multiple-aperture ultrasound array into a region of interest having one or more types of tissue including bones;
- receiving echoes from the region of interest with a plurality of receive elements of the multiple-aperture ultrasound array over a time period following transmission of the first unfocused ultrasound pulse;
- forming a digital data set for a plurality of pixels in the region of interest, the digital data set comprising a plurality of data strings that include echo amplitudes for each of the plurality of receive elements over the time period;
- grouping data patterns of similar values over the time period across different data strings into two or more known object locations;
- and
- classifying a tissue or structure type of at least one of the two or more of the known object locations based on the data patterns of similar values.
