Abstract
The invention pertains to a smoking tip designed to enhance the user's experience through flavor enhancement. The tip comprises a cylindrical-shaped rolled paper filter, with an inner end section interfacing with the smoking substance. This section is infused with a consumable terpene or other flavorant additive. During use, the flavorant saturates only the central filter section directly exposed to the smoke, not coating the outer paper layers that combust. This design acts as a barrier preventing flavorants from bleeding into non-infused filter paper layers, thereby avoiding direct burning of the flavorants and exposure of the user to unpleasant aftertastes.
Claims16
A filter paper having a length and a width that can be rolled for forming a smoking tip in a hand-rolled smoking article, the filter paper comprising:
- a first set of longitudinal regions that is separated by perforations parallel to the width of the filter paper that extend continuously across the entire width of the filter paper, the first set of longitudinal regions spanning across the entire width of the filter paper and a portion of the length of the filter paper, wherein the first set of longitudinal regions forms an infused section, the infused section being infused with a flavorant additive;
- a second set of longitudinal regions that is separated by perforations parallel to the width of the filter paper that extend continuously across the entire width of the filter paper, the second set of longitudinal regions spanning across the entire width of the filter paper and a portion of the length of the filter paper, wherein the second set of longitudinal regions forms a barrier section, the barrier section being unflavored, wherein the second set of longitudinal regions being adjacent to the first set of longitudinal regions;
- and
- an unflavored section disposed adjacent to the second set of longitudinal regions on the filter paper such that the barrier section is disposed between the infused section and the unflavored section,
- whereby the perforations impede capillary action preventing the flavorant additive from migrating laterally from the flavored section into the unflavored section when the filter paper is in a un-rolled configuration, wherein the filter paper is folded at each perforation in opposing directions after each fold before being rolled into a smoking apparatus.
A method of manufacturing a smoking tip for a hand-rolled smoking article, the method comprising:
- (a) providing a cylindrical filter body having a central channel and outer support layers;
- (b) selectively infusing the central channel with a flavorant additive;
- (c) applying a pre-formed composite barrier section between the infused central channel and the outer support layers, the composite barrier section comprising an inner non-porous polymer film layer and an outer hydrophobically-treated filter paper layer;
- (d) forming a plurality of controlled perforations in the composite barrier section by laser etching;
- and
- (e) bonding the composite barrier section to the filter body using a lamination process selected from the group consisting of thermal bonding and ultrasonic bonding,
- whereby the barrier section impedes lateral diffusion of the flavorant additive during subsequent use.
A filter paper for forming a smoking tip, comprising:
- a base layer having a length and width configured to be rolled into a cylindrical shape;
- a flavorant-infused region on the base layer;
- an unflavored region on the base layer;
- and
- a barrier region disposed between the flavorant-infused region and the unflavored region,
- wherein the size of the unflavored region is equal to or larger than the size of the combination of the flavorant-infused region and barrier regions,
- wherein the barrier region is configured to prevent migration of flavorant from the flavorant-infused region to the unflavored region when the substrate is in an unrolled configuration,
- wherein when the substrate is rolled into the cylindrical shape, the flavorant-infused region forms an interior channel through which smoke passes, and the unflavored region forms an outer layer isolated from the flavorant-infused region by the barrier region.
