Abstract
The present disclosure provides a direct synthesis method for making a cathode active material by utilizing used cathode active material. This method utilizes a hydrothermal process comprising mixing a black mass or a processed black mass with an acid solution to generate a first solution, separating at least a portion of undissolved particles from the first solution, generating a second solution by mixing the first solution with a base solution under a hydrothermal condition to synthesize the cathode active material, and separating the cathode active material from the second solution.
Claims18
A method for making a cathode active material comprising:
- mixing a black mass or a processed black mass with an acid solution to generate a first solution;
- separating at least a portion of undissolved particles from the first solution;
- generating a second solution by mixing the first solution with a base solution under a hydrothermal condition to synthesize the cathode active material;
- and
- separating the cathode active material from the second solution.
A system for making a cathode active material, comprising:
- a feedstock source containing a black mass or a processed black mass, wherein the black mass or the processed black mass comprises a used cathode active material;
- a plurality of tanks configured to store a plurality of reactant solutions comprising an acid solution and a base solution;
- a mixer fluidically coupled to the feedstock source and at least one of the plurality of tanks and configured to mix the black mass or the processed black mass and the acid solution to generate a first solution;
- a hydrothermal reactor fluidically coupled to the mixer and the plurality of tanks, the hydrothermal reactor configured to synthesize the cathode active material from the first solution and the base solution under a hydrothermal condition;
- and
- one or more solid-liquid separators configured to separate undissolved particles from the first solution and to separate the synthesized cathode active material from a reactor effluent.
