Apparatus and method for fluid manipulation

An intentional fluid manipulation apparatus (IFMA) assembly, the IFMA assembly comprising:

• a boundary apparatus having a surface at an interface between the boundary apparatus and a fluid;
• an upstream intentional momentum shedding apparatus (IMSA);
• and
• at least a downstream IMSA;
• wherein the boundary apparatus is coupled to the upstream IMSA and the downstream IMSA;
• wherein the upstream IMSA is configured to impart a first induced velocity to a local free stream flow during a nominal operating condition, and
• wherein the downstream IMSA, is arranged such that during the nominal operating condition at least a portion of the fluid passing through both the upstream IMSA and the downstream IMSA forms a first streamtube, with the downstream IMSA being configured to impart a second induced velocity to the local free stream flow within the first streamtube, wherein the second induced velocity at a location of the downstream IMSA has a component in a direction opposite to the direction of the first induced velocity at the location of the downstream IMSA within the first streamtube, and
• wherein the upstream IMSA can be configured to decrease a spatial fluid flow velocity gradient in the vicinity of at least a portion of the surface of the boundary apparatus, the spatial fluid flow velocity gradient being calculated in a direction aligned with an outward normal of the surface, the decrease in the spatial fluid flow velocity gradient occurring relative to a baseline scenario in which the upstream IMSA and the downstream IMSA have a negligible effect on the fluid flow.
