Pressure pulsation muffling device

A muffler assembly for attenuating pressure pulsations emitted from a refrigerant compressor of a climate control system, the muffler assembly comprising:

• an adjustable resonator that is in fluid communication with the discharge flow path coupled to the refrigerant compressor, the adjustable resonator having an adjustable internal volume:
• a stack of plates that are configured to be in fluid communication with the discharge flow path coupled to the refrigerant compressor, the stack of plates comprising:
• a first plate;
• and
• a second plate,
• wherein the first plate and the second plate are configured to be abutted against one another in the stack to define a volume in fluid communication with the discharge flow path that extends radially outward from an inner diameter of the discharge flow path and circumferentially about a central axis of the discharge flow path, and
• wherein the stack of plates forms the plurality of radial resonators and are used to attenuate pressure pulsations in a first portion of a range of frequencies and the adjustable resonator is used to attenuate pressure pulsations in a second portion of the range of frequencies.

A method comprising:

• (a) connecting a discharge line to a refrigerant compressor of a climate control system, the discharge line including a first flange;
• (b) connecting a second flange to the first flange, to thereby define a radial resonator between the first flange and the second flange that is configured to attenuate pressure pulsations emitted by the refrigerant compressor into the discharge line, the radial resonator defining a volume in fluid communication with the discharge line that extends radially outward from an inner diameter of the discharge line and circumferentially about a central axis of the discharge line;
• and
• (c) coupling an adjustable resonator to the discharge line, wherein the adjustable resonator is in fluid communication with a discharge flow path along the discharge line and coupled to the refrigerant compressor, the adjustable resonator having an adjustable internal volume.
