The present disclosure provides methods for purifying a hydrocarbon by flowing an aqueous phase a mixing region of a reactor, mixing, via a countercurrent flow, an organic phase with the aqueous phase, and introducing steam into the mixing region containing the aqueous phase and the organic phase. The flow of the organic phase is along a direction opposite the flow of the aqueous phase and the organic phase contains a contaminant. The aqueous phase and the organic phase are mixed via the countercurrent flow to produce flow conditions exhibiting a Reynolds number of about 2,000 or less. The contaminant may be or contain one or more of phosphorous, calcium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, or any combination thereof. The method also includes heating the mixing region, extracting a purified organic phase from a purification region of the reactor; and extracting a waste from a waste region of the reactor.
