Abstract
A composition includes particular amounts of a polyphenylene ether, a polystyrene, a block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic and a conjugated diene, and a flame retardant. The composition, after foaming with a blowing agent, has a density of less than 0.5 g/cm3. Methods of making the composition are also described.
Claims20
A composition comprising:
- 20 to 70 weight percent of a polyphenylene ether;
- 20 to 60 weight percent of a homopolystyrene, optionally in combination with a high impact polystyrene;
- 0.1 to 15 weight percent of a block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic and a conjugated diene;
- and
- 1 to 25 weight percent of a flame retardant;
- wherein weight percent of each component is based on the total weight of the composition;
- and
- wherein the composition, after foaming with a blowing agent, has a density of less than 0.5 g/cm3, or 0.05 to 0.4 g/cm3.

A method of making a composition, the method comprising:
- melt mixing in an extruder
- 20 to 70 weight percent of a polyphenylene ether;
- 20 to 60 weight percent of a homopolystyrene optionally in combination with a high impact polystryene;
- 0.1 to 15 weight percent of a block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic and a conjugated diene;
- and
- 1 to 25 weight percent of a flame retardant;
- to provide a first mixture, wherein weight percent of each component is based on the total weight of the first mixture;
- introducing a blowing agent into the extruder;
- mixing the blowing agent and the mixture in the extruder to provide a second mixture;
- cooling the second mixture, optionally in a second extruder;
- and
- foaming the second mixture through a die to provide the composition having a density of less than 0.5 g/cm3, or 0.05 to 0.4 g/cm3.
