A method for operating a cracking process produces a cracked gas from which one or more product streams and one or more hydrocarbon-containing by-product-streams are recovered. The method comprises subjecting at least one of the by-product-streams or a partial stream thereof to a hydrocarbon-to-hydrogen conversion process to produce a hydrogen product stream; and combusting at least a part of the hydrogen product stream to provide thermal energy to the cracking process, wherein the hydrocarbon-to-hydrogen conversion process is a moving bed hydrocarbon pyrolysis process. The plant set-up enables the use of hydrogen firing for providing thermal energy as a full or partial replacement of firing fossil resources such as natural gas as in prior art processes.
